Eight Health Principles
Timeless foundations for complete body alignment.
8 Laws of Health
- Proper Diet: What you eat is one of the greatest influences on your health. A nourishing diet supports energy, vitality, and long-term wellness, while poor choices can set the stage for disease.
- Clean Water: Since more than half of the human body is made of water, staying well-hydrated is essential. Clean water supports circulation, organ function, detoxification, and overall life-sustaining processes.
- Exercise: Keeping the body active is a powerful way to strengthen and protect it. Regular movement improves cardiovascular health, supports the joints, and boosts mental and emotional well-being.
- Fresh Air: Deep, steady breaths of clean air oxygenate the body, cleanse the blood, and support both mental and physical balance.
- Sunlight: Sunlight provides more than warmth and brightness—it is a natural source of healing. It boosts vitamin D, strengthens the immune system, and nourishes both body and spirit.
- Temperance (Self-Control): Self-control guides and supports every other health law. By practicing moderation and avoiding harmful habits, we make space for better choices and lasting transformation.
- Rest: Quality rest gives the body and mind the time needed to repair, restore, and recharge. Adequate sleep supports clarity, emotional balance, immunity, and long-term health.
- Trust in God: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5) True peace and direction come from placing your life in God’s hands and holding onto the One who holds everything together.
Core Conditions Linked to Modern Living
S - Sunlight
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1.
“Perfect cleanliness, plenty of sunlight, careful attention to sanitation in every detail of the home life, are essential to freedom from disease and to the cheerfulness and vigor of the inmates of the home.” Ministry of Healing, p.276.
Sunlight has a stimulating effect on the immune system, as it increases the oxygen supply to the skin and has the similar effect as exercise to speed up the metabolism.
Sunlight also stimulates the liver, which increases its ability to deal with toxins, and therefore help ease the burden of the immune system.
Vitamin D Production
Vitamin D is actually a hormone. Although it is found in some foods, the body actually makes all we need in the skin - if we have sun.
Vitamin D plays an important role in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestinal tract and aids their transport and distribution through the body. It ensures that the proper proportions of calcium and phosphorus are deposited in the bones and teeth, making them straight and strong. It also prevents rickets and osteomalacia - very painful and deforming diseases.
Exposing your face to sunlight for just 15 minutes will give you more than your daily requirement. It was discovered in 1904 that sunshine penetrates through skin, and causes a chemical reaction to happen that converts the cholesterol in the skin to vitamin (or hormone) D. A study involving 30 patients with hardening of the arteries showed an almost 13% decrease in blood cholesterol levels following 1 single sunbath. As the concentration of cholesterol in the skin goes down, the cholesterol in the blood, the plaque in arteries, etc. is also reduced.
- Regulates Sleep And Other Cycles- Light entering the eye affects the action of the hypothalamus, a small organ in the brain that has the task of regulating our biological clock, or our “circadian rhythm”.
- Promotes Health of The Skin - Regular moderate exposure to sunlight protects the skin and builds up a natural resistance to the harmful effects of UV light.

- Soothes the Nerves
- Helps the Heart and Circulation– it lowers the resting pulse rate by toning up the heart muscle and other blood vessels.

- Reminds Us of Our Finiteness “The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion. Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the name of the LORD; praise him, O ye servants of the LORD.” Psalm 134:3, 135:1.

T - Temperance
“Temperance alone is the foundation of all the graces that come from God, the foundation of all victories to be gained.” Temperance, p. 201
What is the meaning of temperance? The word temperance, when used in the context of health, has three very distinct meanings: one, moderation is the use of that which is good; two, total abstinence from that which is harmful and three, sel
- Moderation is the proper use of what is good.
- Total abstinence is the complete avoidance of what is harmful.
- Self control
The book Temperance (E.G. White) states: “True temperance teaches us to dispense entirely with everything hurtful, and to use judiciously that which is healthful. There are few who realize as they should how much their habits of diet have to do with their health, their character, their usefulness in this world, and their eternal destiny. The appetite should ever be in subjection to the moral and intellectual powers. The body should be servant to the mind, and not the mind to the body.” Temperance, p 138
“In order to preserve health, temperance in all things is necessary, temperance in labor, temperance in eating and drinking… By exercising temperance in daily life, they may be sanctified through the truth.” Temperance, p 141.

T – Tranquil Air
“In order to have good blood, we must breathe well. Full, deep inspirations of pure air, which fill the lungs with oxygen, purify the blood. They impart to it a bright color and send it, a life-giving current, to every part of the body. A good respiration soothes the nerves; it stimulates the appetite and renders digestion more perfect; and it induces sound, refreshing sleep…
“If an insufficient supply of oxygen is received, the blood moves sluggishly. The waste, poisonous matter, which should be thrown off in the exhalations from the lungs, is retained, and the blood becomes impure. Not only the lungs, but the stomach, liver, and brain are affected. The skin becomes sallow, digestion is retarded; the heart is depressed; the brain is clouded; the thoughts are confused; gloom settles upon the spirits; the whole system becomes depressed and inactive, and peculiarly susceptible to disease.” Ministry of Healing, p 272.
- Oxygen: Essential for conversion of food into energy
- Energy: If there is plenty of oxygen (aerobic respiration), each glucose molecule will produce 36-38 molecules of ATP (our energy storage molecule).
- Circulation: “Perfect health requires a perfect circulation…” Ministry of Healing, p 293.
- Fat in the diet thickens and slows the blood -Agglutination
- Sugar in the diet thickens the blood and lowers oxygen levels
- Overeating greatly affects the blood flow.
- A sedentary life compromises the circulation
- Unevenly distributed clothing disrupts even circulation.
- Lack of trust in God or feelings of guilt hinder circulation

H – Hydration
Intracellular fluid is the water in the trillions of cells throughout the body. Extracellular fluid is the water outside of the cells. Our bodies are approximately 60% water. Males have a relatively higher water content due to less body fat and more skeletal muscle. Body fat is the least hydrated tissue – 20%. Bone contains more water than fat (upt to 33%). Skeletal muscle is about 65% water.
